Out of the Ordinary/As an gNách is the world’s first virtual reality community opera and the Winner of the FEDORA Digital Prize 2021. Irish National Opera welcomes school groups to join them for a memorable experience at their productions throughout the season, all at a special rate.

This bi-lingual opera is experienced in a virtual reality headset. Written by communities around Ireland, the opera tells the story of a collection of people trying to find land, only to encounter a powerful spirit. This experience is well-suited for schools who may have difficulty getting to Dublin so this package is open to schools across Ireland. No technical requirements are needed and subtitles for the opera are available both in English and as Gaeilge. In addition to the screening, we offer a free workshop on the day exploring careers in the arts.

The Out of the Ordinary creative team brings together some of the foremost artists working with virtual reality technologies in Ireland today. Irish director, Jo Mangan is a leading expert in creative storytelling with experience in site specific theatre and VR performance art. Irish composer Finola Merivale, has been chosen to compose the opera because of her experience in electro-acoustic music and her specific interest in VR as a new medium for operatic expression. Creative production studio Algorithm will complete the creative team with their unique approach to incorporating cutting-edge technology in the creation of stunning visual experiences.
